Wise Choices - Making Them Last

Before you embark on your journey, choose your snack wisely.

Choices For Healthful Eating

  • Step 12. Reward Yourself and Your Family
By now, you should have mastered all the steps to making Wise Choices and Healthful Eating. If you missed some or need to brush up, check past issues at The Way of The California Raisin on the home page at LoveYourRaisins.com.

So, now, it is time to think about rewards for a job well done. Since the whole family joined in, everybody deserves a reward. Here are some to consider.

  • A day at the water park
  • A movie marathon - How many can you see in one day?
  • A short trip to Grandmother's or the nearest national or state park
  • A day at the zoo or visit to the local museum.
If you have a family trip in the works this summer, make a special stop where you might visit one of the many Celebrity Chefs who have provided some of the California Raisin recipes that have helped to make your journey to Healthful Eating so great. If one of them is close to home, make it a night on the town and check out the California Raisin items on the menu.

Of course, a great place to start would be right here in the heart of the Raisin Country, where you can visit Celebrity Chefs, but you could visit one of the California Raisin Packers' Growers' Stores, too. You won't be able to miss the grape vines along Highway 99 as you traverse this Central Valley from one end to the other and, come mid-August just before school starts, you could see the harvest in full swing.

Traveling south, from Fresno, you will find these Chefs in Los Angeles, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Tucson, Arizona. Living or venturing into Texas, see our Celebrity Chefs in Dallas, Houston, Austin and Corpus Christi. In the Deep South, Atlanta, Georgia; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Orlando, Florida are home to several of them, while one or two can be found in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

If you're headed to the northern climes, everybody knows that there is fine food to be had in San Francisco, California. You will find a number of our Celebrity Chefs there and, even further north in Seattle, Washington. Head east out of San Francisco or southeast out of Seattle and you simply must stop in Aspen, Colorado, and Chicago, Illinois, to enjoy the great goodness of California Raisins as prepared by those Celebrity Chefs. Go to http://www.LoveYourRaisins.com/recipes/chefs/ to find the locations of all our Celebrity Chefs and the great California Raisin recipes that they have created.

Summer's Getting Hotter! Let's All Grill!

If yours is to be a stay-at-home summer, how about a grill fest with some of these Chefs' very best recipes? What better reward can you think of than a backyard party with all you friends and family in attendance? Make it a real celebration!

Simple fare is sometimes the most appealing, so burgers and sandwiches can fill the bill. Chef Jason Rogers' Pulled Pork with Raisin Corn Bread is a good filler-upper. Start early and roast the pork on the grill and slice it thin while still hot. Go a little tropical and serve Island Chicken Wraps with glazed breast of chicken hot off the grill. Burgers with Raisin Salsa provide a little spice to the party, if you like.

Speaking of spicing up the party, choose your favorite meat and serve it with Chef Roy Harland's Tropical Fruit Salsa with California Raisins, or glaze chicken drumsticks with the Golden Raisin Glaze. We even have a Housemade Steak Sauce to serve with beef and a Raisin Garlic Barbecue Sauce if barbecue is the way you go.

Too hot to cook? Check out the Maple-Pesto Salmon Salad with California Golden Raisins and Toasted Pine Nuts and do the cooking outside. Grilled Pizza Salad with Tossed Greens and Golden Raisin Peach Vinaigrette falls into this category, too, as does the Grilled Vietnamese Beef Salad with California Golden Raisin Relish and Chef Paul Fischbach's Grilled Halibut Salad.

For more elegant outdoor fare, consider Grilled Filet Mignon with California Raisin-Onion Jam, Baked Tomatoes and Spinach-Peanut Sauté or Grilled Veal Chop with Raisin-Rice Pilaf. One of our special Summer Recipes, Grilled Limoncello Chicken with California Raisins or Marinated Grilled Chicken Skewers with California Raisin Sambal make great celebration meals. Grilled Tuna with California Golden Raisin Chutney will thrill any seafood aficionado.
